Budget 2014 - Changes to Private Health Insurance Tax Relief at Source

Budget 2014 - Changes to Private Health Insurance Tax Relief at Source

16.10.2013

In Budget 2014, the government announced that it is capping the Tax Relief at Source to a gross premium of €1,000 per adult (€800 net) and €500 gross (€400 net) per student and child on all health insurance policies. Previously, the tax relief at source was 20% of the gross premium with no cap regardless of the premium amount. In many cases this has reduced the tax relief and increased the cost of premiums.

Unfortunately, this change came into effect immediately (from midnight 15 October 2013) and has regrettably resulted in an increase in the premium you pay after tax.

It is important to note that this change is not as a result of Aviva Health increasing premiums. We were not consulted or given any notice about this change.

All customers with a renewal date or a policy start date effective from 16th October 2013 onwards with a plan that costs more than €1,000 gross (€800 net) per adult per year are impacted by this change. Customers who have made a mid-term change to their policy from this date are also impacted, if the change involves a premium adjustment. You will receive new  policy documentation which displays the updated premium information showing the new tax relief at source amount. Any previous version of this documentation that you may have received is no longer valid.

If you pay your premium by direct debit, you will receive a revised direct debit schedule showing the new monthly amount to be debited from your bank account. If you pay annually by cheque or credit card, you will receive a letter advising the outstanding premium owed.
